Golden Globe Awards 2020 Winners

This year marked the 77th Golden Globe Awards, with multiple surprise winners and the return of host Ricky Gervais, for the fifth time. The last Golden Globes Gervais hosted was the 2016 ceremony and he has now said that this is his “final time” as host for the award ceremony.

Tom Hanks was honoured with Cecil B. DeMille Award for outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment. He gave an emotional speech, dedicated to his family shortly after a montage of his acting highlights were played. Ellen DeGeneres was honoured with the Carol Burnett Award for outstanding contributions to television on or off the screen, presented to her by SNL star Kate McKinnon.

1917 won the night with the Best Picture Drama and Best Director Award in a shock result, he expressed his surprise in his speech. Despite predictions that Netflix would take the Globes by storm, Netflix did not win big, with only one award, for Supporting Actress in a Drama Picture won by Laura Dern for Marriage Story. Adam Driver, Scarlett Johannson and Eddie Murphy all lost out as Netflix nominees.

Elton John and Burnie Taupin won the award for Best Original Song “Love Me Again” in Rocketman. Elton called it “the greatest honour of my life”. Rocketman also won another award with the Best Actor Award – Musical or Comedy awarded to Taron Egerton who portrayed Elton John himself in the film. Egerton beat Eddie Murphy and Leonardo Dicaprio to the award in another shock result.

Speeches for the night revolved around the subjects of the Australian Bushfires as well as the ceremony introducing vegan cuisine, highlighted for Best Actor Drama Winner, Joaquin Phoenix.
