The 2020 Academy Awards Winners

The 2020 Academy Awards took place in Los Angeles, on Sunday 9th February. History was made and there were a few surprising results, that defied expectations.

Parasite, the South Korean masterpiece, won the Oscar for best picture, making history as the first film not in the English language to win the movie industry’s highest honour. About the gap between rich and poor in modern Seoul, the film won a total of four Oscars, including best director and screenplay for Bong Joon Ho and best international feature. Best Picture and Director were predicted to go Sam Mendes for the compelling 1917, nevertheless, 1917 still picked up 3 Oscars including Best Cinematography for Roger Deakins.

Joaquin Phoenix won his first Oscar, for Best Actor, portraying a struggling clown who turns to violence in the comic book adaptation, Joker. Phoenix gave an impassioned speech about climate change and animal rights, similar to previous awards shows.

Renee Zellweger won the Best Actress Oscar for her performance as Judy Garland in her later years of life in the musical biopic, Judy.
